Hague hears Georgian complaints of ethnic cleansing
The International Court of Justice in The Hague has begun hearing Georgia's complaint that Russia violated human rights in the war over Georgia's separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. For three days, the UN court is to hear Georgian accusations that Russia engaged in ethnic cleansing. Georgia wants the court to order Moscow to allow refugees to return to areas of the country still under Russian control, and to stop what Tbilisi calls Russian persecution of ethnic Georgians. Russia has not responded publicly to the Georgian application.
